Diazepam is a benzodiazepine from 1960, with highly requested characteristics, including relaxant effects in skeletal muscle, anticonvulsant properties, and sedative as well as anxiolytic effects. It's the only benzodiazepine able to mimic brain-dead wave status.

Mechanisms of action
Its mechanism of action works by increasing the effect of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), specifically GABAA receptor subunits at central nervous system (CNS) neuronal synapses typically on limbic system, thalamus, and hypothalamus.
