Methylphenidate is a piperidine-derived central nervous system stimulant first synthesized in 1944.
It has a mechanism of action distinct from that of amphetamine. Resembles more the actions of catecholamine reuptake inhibitiors such as cocaine.

Methylphenidate has been shown to act as a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI), with higher doses shown to increase norepinephrine and dopamine efflux throughout the brain.
